Caladiums are vibrant, decorative plants loved for their colorful foliage. Native to South America, they are popular in gardens and containers. However, they are sensitive to cold temperatures and require proper winter care to thrive year after year.
Understanding Caladium Dormancy
Caladium tubers enter a period of dormancy during cold months. This natural rest period helps the plant conserve energy. Recognizing when your caladium is going dormant is essential for successful overwintering and storage.
Preparing Caladium Tubers for Storage
Before storing caladium tubers, allow the foliage to die back naturally. Do not cut the leaves prematurely, as this can damage the tubers. Once the leaves have yellowed and withered, carefully dig up the tubers.
Gently brush off excess soil and inspect the tubers for any signs of rot or damage. Discard any unhealthy tubers to prevent the spread of disease.
Cleaning and Curing Tubers
Rinse the tubers with clean water to remove remaining soil. Allow them to dry in a warm, dry, and well-ventilated area for about a week. Curing helps toughen the skin and reduces the risk of rot during storage.
Storing Caladium Tubers
Choose a cool, dark, and dry location for storage, such as a basement, cellar, or garage. Ideal temperatures range from 45°F to 60°F (7°C to 16°C). Avoid areas with high humidity or temperature fluctuations.
Place the tubers in a breathable container, such as paper bags, mesh bags, or cardboard boxes. Do not use plastic bags, as they trap moisture and can cause rot.
Monitoring During Storage
Check the stored tubers periodically for signs of mold, rot, or dehydration. Remove any damaged tubers immediately. If the tubers appear shriveled, lightly mist them with water to maintain moisture.
Resuming Growth in Spring
In spring, when the danger of frost has passed, start preparing your caladiums for replanting. Soak the tubers in water for a few hours to stimulate sprouting. Then, plant them in well-draining soil and provide bright, indirect light.
With proper winter storage, your caladiums will return vibrant and healthy each growing season, providing stunning foliage year after year.
