How to Store Hoya Pubicalyx Cuttings Before Planting

Hoya pubicalyx is a popular trailing plant known for its beautiful, waxy leaves and fragrant flowers. Propagating new plants from cuttings is a common method, but proper storage of cuttings before planting is essential to ensure successful growth. Here’s a guide on how to store Hoya pubicalyx cuttings effectively.

Preparing the Cuttings

Before storing, select healthy, mature stems with at least two leaves. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to make a clean cut just below a node. Remove any excess leaves to prevent rot and ensure better air circulation.

Choosing the Storage Method

There are two main methods for storing Hoya pubicalyx cuttings: dry storage and moist storage. The choice depends on how long you plan to wait before planting.

Dry Storage

Ideal for short-term storage (up to a week). Keep cuttings in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Place them in a paper bag or wrap in a paper towel to absorb moisture and prevent mold. Avoid plastic bags, which can trap humidity and cause rot.

Moist Storage

Suitable for longer storage (up to two weeks). Dip the cut ends in rooting hormone to promote root development. Insert the cuttings into a container with moist potting mix, perlite, or vermiculite. Cover loosely with plastic wrap or a plastic bag to maintain humidity, but ensure some airflow to prevent mold.

Storing in Water

Another effective method is placing cuttings in water. Submerge the cut end in a glass of clean water, ensuring at least one node is underwater. Change the water every few days to prevent stagnation. Keep the container in a warm, bright location but out of direct sunlight. Roots should develop within a few weeks.

Monitoring and Care During Storage

Check stored cuttings regularly for signs of rot or mold. Remove any cuttings showing discoloration or softness. Ensure that moisture levels are maintained if using moist storage, and keep the environment cool and well-ventilated.

Transplanting the Cuttings

When ready to plant, gently remove the cuttings from storage. If stored in water, allow roots to grow at least 1-2 inches. Plant the cuttings in well-draining soil, water lightly, and place in a bright, indirect sunlight location. With proper care, they will develop into healthy new plants.
