How to Store Daffodil Bulbs: Best Practices After Harvest

After enjoying the vibrant blooms of daffodils in spring, proper storage of the bulbs is essential to ensure healthy growth in the following year. Proper handling and storage can extend the life of your bulbs and improve flowering quality.

Harvesting Daffodil Bulbs

Timing is crucial when harvesting daffodil bulbs. Wait until the foliage has turned yellow and died back naturally. This indicates that the plant has stored enough energy in the bulb for the next season.

Carefully dig around the bulbs using a garden fork or spade, taking care not to damage them. Gently lift the bulbs from the soil and brush off excess dirt.

Cleaning and Preparing the Bulbs

Rinse the bulbs with clean water to remove remaining soil. Allow them to dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area for several days. Proper drying reduces the risk of mold and rot during storage.

Choosing a Storage Method

Store daffodil bulbs in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated location. Ideal storage temperatures range from 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15°C). Avoid areas with high humidity or direct sunlight.

Storage Containers

  • Mesh bags
  • Paper bags
  • Wicker baskets

Additional Tips

  • Label bulbs with variety and harvest date for easy identification.
  • Inspect stored bulbs regularly for signs of mold or rot and remove affected bulbs immediately.
  • Do not store bulbs near fruits or vegetables, which release ethylene gas that can damage the bulbs.

Replanting Daffodil Bulbs

Replant bulbs in the fall, about 2 to 4 weeks before the first expected frost. Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Plant the bulbs at a depth of about 6 inches (15 cm), spacing them 3 to 6 inches (8 to 15 cm) apart.

Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture until the ground freezes. Properly stored and replanted bulbs will bloom beautifully the following spring.
