Repotting a barrel cactus can help it grow healthier and prevent it from becoming root-bound. However, it’s important to do this carefully to avoid injury to yourself or the plant. Follow these steps to safely remove your barrel cactus from its pot for repotting.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Thick gloves (preferably leather)
- Safety goggles
- New pot with drainage holes
- Well-draining cactus soil
- Small shovel or trowel
- Old newspaper or cloth
- Water spray bottle
Preparation
Choose a calm, dry day for repotting. Gather all tools and materials beforehand. Wear protective gloves and goggles to prevent injury from spines. Water the cactus lightly a day before to soften the soil and reduce stress.
Removing the Cactus from Its Pot
Place the pot on a stable surface. If the pot is ceramic or heavy, consider turning it upside down gently. Use a small shovel or trowel to loosen the soil around the edges. Carefully tap the sides of the pot to loosen the root ball.
Put on your gloves and goggles. Hold the cactus gently but firmly at the base. Tilt the pot and carefully slide the cactus out. If it’s stuck, gently tap the sides or use the shovel to loosen it further.
Removing the Old Soil and Inspecting the Roots
Place the cactus on an old newspaper or cloth. Carefully remove excess soil from the roots using your fingers or a soft brush. Inspect the roots for signs of rot or damage. Healthy roots are white or light tan and firm.
Repotting the Cactus
Fill the new pot with a layer of well-draining cactus soil. Position the cactus in the center. Fill around the roots with soil, pressing gently to eliminate air pockets. Do not bury the cactus deeper than it was in the previous pot.
Aftercare
Place the repotted cactus in a bright, indirect sunlight location. Avoid watering immediately; wait about a week to allow any root injuries to heal. Resume watering sparingly, only when the soil is dry.
Additional Tips
- Always wear protective gear to handle spiny plants safely.
- Use a well-draining soil mix designed for cacti and succulents.
- Handle the cactus gently to prevent damaging the roots or spines.
- Be patient; some cacti may take time to settle into their new pot.
