Fittonia, also known as nerve plant, is a popular houseplant appreciated for its vibrant foliage. Proper soil maintenance is essential for its health. Refreshing the soil periodically helps prevent disease and provides fresh nutrients. Here is a step-by-step guide to refresh your Fittonia’s soil effectively.
Materials Needed
- New potting mix suitable for tropical plants
- Clean pot or container (if repotting)
- Garden trowel or small shovel
- Watering can
- Gloves (optional)
- Water
Step 1: Prepare the New Soil
Choose a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. You can mix peat moss, perlite, and compost to create an ideal environment. Prepare enough soil to fill the pot or to top up the existing soil.
Step 2: Remove the Plant from Its Pot
Gently take the Fittonia out of its current pot. Tap the sides if needed to loosen the soil. Carefully shake off or gently remove excess soil from the roots.
Step 3: Inspect and Prune the Roots
Examine the roots for signs of rot or damage. Trim any brown, mushy, or dead roots with clean scissors or pruning shears. This promotes healthy growth.
Step 4: Refresh the Soil
Place a layer of fresh soil at the bottom of the pot. Position the plant so that the root ball sits at the same depth as before. Fill around the roots with new soil, gently pressing to eliminate air pockets.
Step 5: Water the Plant
Water thoroughly until excess drains out of the bottom. This helps settle the soil and ensures the roots have adequate moisture. Avoid overwatering, as Fittonia prefers moist but not waterlogged soil.
Step 6: Post-Refresh Care
Place your Fittonia in a location with bright, indirect light. Maintain consistent moisture levels and avoid direct sunlight. Regularly check the soil’s moisture and water as needed to keep the plant healthy.
